Monday was Coptic Christmas and Matt had the day off work so we decided to go visit the pyramids at Saqqara, about 30 kilometres outside the city. Saqqara is the site of the 'step pyramid', the world's first pyramid and although we had heard about it a lot, we'd never visited them before. Unlike the great pyramids, there are intact tombs with sarcophaguses and well-preserved hieroglyphics everywhere and a well-curated museum with several mummies and other artifacts. It was a really amazing place - I only wish we had know about it so we could have taken our recent visitors. Oh well, you'll all have to come back and visit us again before we leave Egypt!
